IRON CROW THEATRE’S  fucking a conjures ‘trumps america’

HISTORIC AND AWARD-WINNING 16/17 SEASON OF DARK PLAY CONTINUES

BALTIMORE, Maryland - January 21, 2017: Iron Crow Theatre continues it’s historic, and now award-winning, 16/17 season of Dark Play with Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks’, harrowing and poignant, Fucking A. This marks the debut of Iron Crow Theatre’s first main stage drama in it’s biggest season ever. Inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel The Scarlet Letter,  Suzan-Lori Parks’ Fucking A offers a bleak and dystopian view of the sadistic power games we are forced to play as members of a ‘free’ and ‘modern’ society. Set in a post-apocalyptic world divided by class and corruption, reminiscent of today’s “Trump’s America”, we find Hester Smith working the only job available - abortionist to the lower class. It’s here, where its players are subject to arbitrary imprisonment, and where sexuality and fertility are discussed in an alternate language, that Hester hopes to save enough for a ‘promised’ reunion with her 'wrongfully' imprisoned son. A dark fable with music, including brief sardonic songs, Fucking A is an expressionistic exploration of society and the socio-political games within that we are all forced to play as told through the lens of a mothers undying love.

Fucking A it a story of what it means to be ‘the other’. For us, ‘queer’, regardless of how you define it for yourself, will always live alongside this experience,” said Sean Elias, Artistic Director and CEO. “Fucking A is one of the queerest pieces in form that I have ever read. As we work to broaden the definition of queer beyond sexual orientation, Fucking A serves as a wonderful reminder of the many ways in which we can experience ‘queer’.”

“It is both an incredibly beautiful play and a very dark play,” said director Dr. Stephen Nunns of Towson University. “This amazingly talented cast is attacking very difficult and complicated material with zeal and gusto. Deirdre McAllister's music is beautiful and captures this dark, very American world to a T.”
