DEFIANCE JOURNEY

WRITTEN & PERFORMED BY SABRIAYA SHIPLEY

In defiance

I’d brand my tongue with every gay utterance

Than laugh at the gag being a display silence

A defiant

Relishing in existing in the non-binary

Watching former selves drown in the hurricanes sent to revive the souls of dying men

Offer up my womb

In a land with laws wide streaming the control of who gives life

I’d gladly row along the waters my ancestors waded in

Holding on to shoes meant for a ballroom

Claiming there is freedom

Can you hear it

The defiance

Being in alignment with the masters of words

bound on pages of colonizers who look for god in our skys

Since no man is quick to apologize

There will be no applause

No right hand over my heart for this democracy

An offbeat hypocrisy that can’t keep up with the rhythm of my residency

rather be on bended knees

Rocking hard at the horrors of Justice when it’s cracked at the roots

Admit how I’m head over heels in love

With our love that is love

that is loved

that is lost

In the presence of mankind

I’d resign once defiance has become an infected sore

Ready for the picking

It will be sickening with no means to healing

The scabs blood will pour out into the gutter alongside the memories of the Black bodies we mourn

There will be more defiance

The alliance

Disguised in our joy

Our laughter

Our creative fears

Spewing out of the sides of our mouths

The tips of our fingers

The curls in our moaning toes

The queer truths exposed

Next to poisons set out on the table for us to drink

Until we spun the wheel to reveal

How we spat our ancestors remains back out into the face of an earthquake

In climate changed due to institutions we would like to choke

Hoping to implode with green pastures of returned lands

Land acknowledgments signed with white hands

Bloodlines of reparations

Screaming in the ecstasy of this being our body

I offer up to you

In all of our god’s name we do pray

In defiance
